Went in the away end at Derby a few weeks ago. The safe standing is about 90% of the stand with only a small wedge of seats at the front for those who want to sit. And the stewards are very hot on checking which section your ticket is for.
The pubs around the station are, indeed, fantastic. But they are now home fans only. You might be alright if you're not wearing colours and can convince the bouncers you're local by calling everyone "me duck". The official away pub is The Navigation which is next to the away fans parking. It's a 25 minute walk from the station though, and then another 15 minute walk back to Pride Park so not great if you're on the train.
In the ground they have Atlantic IPA on tap which is passable. Otherwise it's the usual fizzy piss.
