Royals TV Match Commentary; better or worse?

I didn't think the audio commentary couldn't get any worse, until last night. the main commentor said "oh. it's a goal". in the middle of rabbiting on to his mate . He tried to hide his embarrassment by saying that it came out of the blue. RC said when he arrived that he aimed to improve Royals TV. Well, you have made it worse in my view. Rob may be able to watch in the USA and not listen to Tim and co. which will no doubt please him, by all accounts. TV commentary on audio does not work (unlike audio commentary on TV). As there no pictures we need a running commentary on what is happening on the pitch, not the drivel we are getting from Royals TV now. Why is the co-commentor always inaudible, doesn't he have a mike? If he does can someone turn it up, please. Please Rob, as most in the UK, who rely on Royals TV for their match enjoyment, can only listen and not watch the match, can we have BBC Berks back again as we got less drivel and more passion then?
What are your thoughts? Yes, I do know certain Anti Tim posters on here will shoot me down in flames,, but I would still like to here their views and if they have changed recently.

I've not heard any of the Royals TV commentary this season, as I'll just stick the radio on to listen to a game.

However, surely the club could provide the option of which commentary people have? If people are using Royals TV as a radio platform, they should have the option of radio commentary; if people are using Royals TV as a television platform, they should have the option of television commentary.

I think Phil is warming up and better than Dellar. I really like the idea of involving fans from podcasts etc... community driven. Maybe less often though.

It'll take a little time to find it's feet, but delighted to not be listening to Dellor any more.

I would take the opposite view. If I'm paying a tenner to watch a game with comms I would at least expect someone with some form of playing or managerial background to provide you with snippets that may not be so obvious. You also run the risk of a fan podcast going a bit easy on potential criticism knowing full well they have a commentary gig again in the next match.

I would say fans running a podcast will be more honest in their assesment than a journalist who has to maintain a relationship with the club.

Although obviously an employee of the club is going to be pretty low on criticism.

I don't think podcasters should be regulars, but a few games a season seems pretty good.


A mix of ex players, current players, podcasters and former staff seems a pretty good idea to me. You want co-comms to vary so you get different views and anecdotes, not the same tired old 'Mick's big in Rotherham' 'Newcastle are losing again' tedium all the time.

At least with Tim and Mick they are mostly football related. and you can hear both of them. More than can be said for the muppets Royals TV have had so far.

For Ian’s sake, it’s nice to have choices, even if the alternative to Mick, Tim and Ady is not winning any plaudits here, (a bit like 107’s ‘Royal Box’ and the bland boring predecessor that was on Berks Gold).

The likes of Ian just want to hear 90 minutes of pure bland match action….that’s absolutely fine, nothing wrong with that….however most games have less than 90 minutes of pure match action.
The light-hearted of us actually enjoy some of the incidental distractions that occur on a match day, normally up in some bleak place in northern Yorkshire or somewhere…..you can almost taste those pasties and pies.

A lot worse. Nothing pre match, off for a cup of tea at half time and nothing post match. I much prefer the old format even if interrupted by adverts at times. Bring back Adie & co. I have tried linking with Radio Berks commentary but cannot do as no service during match.

Perhaps some feedback to the club would be good. Ask for 30 mins build up where they could review previous games and the days opponents and half hour after, where they could pre-empt Tim with a Noel interview and ask them to stick around at HT to review the half and summarise goings on at the other day’s games. There are two of them now JE has joined up so with the inclusion of a player (or someone from the coaching team) not playing to help on “duties” it should be perfectly viable.

A fan's no different to many tbh. And people said one of the good things about Dellor was he was a fan. I did say in with a mix of ex-players and staff.

I assumed the BBC RB commentary wasn't available online due to copyright reasons, but discovered during the Wycombe game that you could listen live on the BBC Sounds app. Don't know how long that's been the case but I'm wondering if its since the club stopped taking the commentary. I'm fortunate to be able to listen to the coverage via the TV, but its usual to know that the BBC Sounds app is another option when the reception is bad (albeit it is about 30 seconds behind i think on the Sounds app).

Nope, in the UK. It did occur to me that it might be a one off but i'm sure i've checked since and it was available. Next time I'm listening i'll check again.

Yes and often doesn't kick back in again until quite some time after the game has ended (at least that's my experience when listening as I walk away from The SCL post match.

I wasn't a great fan of Dellor and often felt he lacked objectivity and was over critical at times. He also seemed to like to have a regular scapegoat. Once a player was in his bad books it often seemed very difficult for them to get out.

However, by going back in house and quite often using current players, the bias has swung the other way. Understandably, those currently on the payroll of the club are going to be very wary about criticising what they see on the pitch.
