We bring a manager in who plays a certain way with a 3-4-3 formation. We don't have the players for it, especially in midfield and wing-back positions. So we either stick with a traditional four at the back or address it in the transfer window

Football is a simple game played often and managed by fairly simple people.
Goalkeepers are goal keepers
Full backs are full backs
Midfielders are midfielders
Wingers are wingers
Strikers are strikers
Some players are capable of playing in different positions

Systems vary between about 3 different ways of playing and a manager is there to tell them where to play.
This stuff about having to play a certain system because the manager likes to play that way is just nonsense.
Wingers can drop back to help the defence, a midfielder can drop deeper to help the centre-backs and even at the lowest levels players can do that during a game using what football intelligence they have and don't need a manager to tell them that they should be doing it-by then it is probably too late.

So please, let's hear less about managers only playing in a certain way and players only being able to do one job-it's rubbish.

Feels like Maguire gets the flack he does for the price Utd paid for him, which is obviously not his fault. Overpriced at £70m but he'd just had an excellent World Cup with England and was playing well for Leicester. If they'd have paid less than £40m for him, I think a lot of people would have a very different view of him.

I've always thought he was a decent player, certainly when he plays for England. Also scores ridiculous penalties, especially for a defender.

That performance against a 10-man Everton was utterly brainless. There are ways to break down a team in that situation - you move the ball at speed, you stretch the pitch etc - but they just ignored that basic stuff. Painful (and comical) to watch.

Like the time you couldn't beat a team that was down to nine (9) players. Collective performance is not necessarily rational. I can't remember if you were good that year, and it was just an off-performance, or if you were on a relegation spiral.

I've also seen various pundits offer various competing options to the obvious solutions i.e. some saying it was obvious Amad should have started out on the RWB and others saying it was crazy to move him from the central position where he was having some joy dribbling round players.

Who does he bring on to change things? Just two injuries to our frontline and we're left threadbare
