An evening with Steve Coppell

We have been approached by Crosfield School who are having an evening with Steve Coppell on Friday 5 November at £20 a ticket.
Given the date there are plenty of tickets available

I went as did a few other Royals L know as well as a lot of the parents etc who were also Royals fans

It was an interesting evening and, compared with Fans Forums when Steve was manager, I think he was more open. He spoke more about his time playing and lots of anecdotes about football in general. As a Reading fan probably the most interesting comment was that he regrets leaving Reading but he felt burned out and needed a break.

There were several of the local media there (Jonny Fordham and the triumvirate of Dloor, Gooding and Williams from BBCBerks) so there may be other reports available.

Still say JM got it wrong. They should have put Kevin Dillon in charge of the club for 6 months while Sir Steve had a holiday to recharge his batteries.

He said if he was more 'forceful' with the Chairman then he could have got Lescott (because Everton were stalling over his fitness) and also Jagielka (but he was playing in midfield at the time and we were strong in midfield)

I got the impression that he would have come back to Reading after having a short break so the club could have made that work if they wanted to. Also they could have approached him when Rodgers left so I guess they didnt want him back...

He is also touting Reading as a great club for the would-be investors who he comes into contact with through his other business interests.

Lots of other bits and pieces and was a good evening.

This was in answer to who did you regret not signing so was it more forceful with JM or just pushed harder for them - the impression I got was that he assumed he would not get them but now realises that he could have nipped infront of Everton because they were being cautious about about Lescott's knees.

I think it was time for us to move on from Coppell personally. Although if at some point in the next two or three years there's an opening and he feels up for it, I'd welcome him back. I think there were still too many around from the end of his time here for him to have come back in when Rodgers went.

Don't want Coppell back now, RFC have moved on, I cannot see any way he could return in the future. He knows how the club operates and is run, and the limitations that there are here. He did a fantastic job under those limitations, but to do it again would be a double miracle. There is no way the money is there to invest, so it has to be done the Reading way, brick by brick.

once all the old players have gone, and its all a new club, hes proven he is perfect for building teams on the cheap and taking them up.

I base my view as the same about players that have left. Most players leave to go on to better things, no objection at all there. I always feel that believing that they can do better elsewhere breaks a bond with the club, and I always feel it is a bond that cannot be replaced.

There are always exceptions to the rule, Senior and Adie Williams to name two. Senior somehow had a bad time at Watford and Middlesborough, and returning to us seemed right, as it proved to be. Adie just loved RFC, not sure he ever really wanted to leave

Hmmm. How would your boss react if you told him you needed a 6 month holiday to recharge your batteries?

I would agree but tend to think SSC may also be the sort to be an exception as he proved at Palace. Even he realises that at the mo BM needs no competition and it wasn't a plea for his job just a statement that showed he felt at home at Reading
