What's the cut off in terms of level here? For example Sheffield FC were formed in 1857 and have never been near the Football League let alone the top flight.

We do hold the record as having lost more FA cup games than any other league team, even if you add back Notts C from tier 5, as I believe they've won it once or twice.

As there wasn’t a top flight until 1888 I’d call it 118 years (of hurt).

As there wasn’t a top flight until 1888 I’d call it 118 years (of hurt).

Either way it’s probably still a record? It can be beaten of course, only take a Crewe, Wrexham or Chesterfield to go on a bit of a run up the leagues…

League team is correct, although Marlow hold the record

Marlow are the only club that has applied to compete in every FA Cup competition since it first started in 1871-72. They have actually played in each and every tournament to date except 1910-11 when their application missed the deadline for acceptance.

That was a stab in the dark and I almost regretted asking the Q but no bollox, we're actually joint top for playoff finals lost! Another (joint) record then.

Poor buggers though, SU have cocked up so many and also haven't scored in any final ouside of a penalty shoot-out !

Given Reading have only made 6 playoffs (1995, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2017) you could argue that their play off final loss ratio (4 out of 6) is actually better than the Blades' (4 out of 9)!

Preston's record is also fairly grim having failed on 8 out of 8 attempts.

The records of Ipswich and Brentford are also poor as though both clubs have won play offs (Ipswich in 2000 and Brentford in 2021) Ipswich haven't even got to another final in a further 7 play off attempts and Brentford had failed in 9 attempts before finally succeeding at their last (tenth) attempt.
