I can get behind that.

But Federici isn't in the conversation for me. Martinez far superior, and I'd lean towards McCarthy over Fed too. Fed was a solid but not great keeper protected by a good defence and midfield. Always overrated for the camera saves. Just too many big errors and weaknesses to be in the same conversation as Hahnemann or Shaka. I never saw him play, but I'd also put forward Death over Fed for his record, especially given his height.

Shaka is comfortably the best keeper I've ever seen in a Reading shirt & then continued to be great when he left.

Hahnemann was great for us but not on Shaka's level

Not sure Federici is even in a top 10 of Reading keepers I've seen, had a good kick, but I didnt call him Flaperici for nothing!

agree, Voted player of the season for us…there was a reason for that.

Ian suggested Steve Death, me, being of a certain age had the good fortune to see why.

For that reason, Death, Shaka then Marcus then Feds (honourable mentions to Steve Francis and Gary Westwood, goal keepers before my time included one who scored two goals in one game.)

Shaka. Just in a different league. Slight weakness with crosses to the far post but more than meade up for it in pretty much every other part of his game. Marcus was a solid but largely unspectacular keeper. Federici was good on his day but always had a brain fart up his sleeve.

Al Habsi's an odd one. Absolutely brilliant for us been seen as a liability at pretty much every other club he played for.

Hahnemann was first choice keeper for eight seasons. Cannot ever see this being repeated again. Shake had the most dramatic transformation, speed at which he went from raw to top class was remarkable. Remember being upset when Steve Francis left. As a fan for 40 years, think we have been very fortunate with the number 1's - most have enjoyed a good rapport with the fans too.

I recall he was awarded a rare "10" from Match Weekly for his display.

His transfer to Huddersfield was also the start of Neil Warnock's beef with Reading, with Warnock claiming the tribunal fee (much higher than he expected - £250,000?) had cost him his entire transfer budget for the season.

Shaka was something else - the best I've seen. Federici's mistakes gave away four goals in our first week in the premiership and he also threw the ball into the net in the cup semi-final.

Corners are a good test of a goalie. I have always been worried at corners with all of our recent goalies except Al Habsi and Pereira. Shaka seemed unbeatable at times and Steve Death was the closest any goalkeeper has come to being Billy the Fish. Hahnemann never let us down. So overall, the best from the last 50 years are:

Shaka for me. Literally worth ten points in 94-95 season. Feds not top five.

Best single performance- I’m drawn to hazy memories of Death away at Fulham Jan 1971. They’re going up, we’re going down. They battered us from start to finish. We had an unlikely lead from Malcolm Swain (as in Guthrie > Evers > Swain) and Death kept them out single handed until the very last minute. As someone said earlier, there was a Billy the FIsh-ness to the little man.

Al habsi was unbelievable . The play off season he made more saves than anyone else in the league for a team that finished third.

Martinez is the best keeper I've seen at Reading when able to appreciate the role i.e. I was too young for Shaka.

Not who played as much as he did.

Van der Kwaak and Virginia are the only two who spring to mind. Sadly Boyce-Clarke's performances haven't been lots better.
