Why is this still a thing? Just go look at the facebook post of Sheffield united and tyler bindon welcoming himself to the club and then read all the comments

If I was a player and saw that from 'fans' I'd tell the team i wouldn't play for them and go back to Reading where he is wanted

Honestly baffles me why this sort of stuff still happens in 2025 and comments like this are made, no wonder no footballers have come out

I hope our fans would be more accepting

They’re packed full of 14-18 year old bellends who haven’t grown up and think saying things like this makes them look hard and “edgy”. And no-one over 25 still uses FB really, it’s where your mum goes to see if she can find people she went to school with and practice “technology”.

I’ve looked at the main Blades message board and they seem to be calling these idiots out for what they are. Their concern about Tyler is more the fact he’s “only” league one proven and their club not showing ambition.

Also Tyler is an intelligent and educated footballer and thinks about what he says, like Kitson used to surprise people by sounding erudite and intelligent when speaking, this doesn’t fit the expectation especially “oop north”. And being still stuck in the 1960s these idiots still equate a public school sounding accent with being effeminate

They’ll all disappear after he plays couple of games and they see what a cultured player he is, even if they are north of Watford.

Social media is a snapshot of society, and there's plenty of people who like to spout bile knowing the current cultural environment means they're very unlikely to get any real trouble for it. So, although I'd agree that Twitter/FB doesn't necessarily reflect society's views as a whole, but it clearly shows there is a significant minority who feel that way.

It really disappointed me to see what was said about Tyler, and I fear that his style of play may still annoy them especially if they struggle to get going in the early part of the season. Perhaps he could nut someone on his debut and get a three match ban, then they'd take to him like their beloved psychopath Chris Morgan.

I assume these fans saw Bindon and had exciting thoughts about him and as they can't possibly be gay because they like whippets, pigeon racing and flat caps, it has to be the player who is gay and infecting them with his gayness.

It’s brave of him cos for some unknown reason it’s still a big stigma in men’s football even tho it’s generally excepted and not a problem in British society.
Good on him tho hopefully more players in the men’s game will come out in support and break these barriers down.

Some players too. Judging by the amount of "God is good" comments player is make in social media there is likely quite a number of religious players who wouldn't take too kindly to having a gay teammate.

I'm sure the vast majority of Blades are as disgusted as we are.

However, his voice hasn't changed, and I don't recall a single instance of anything homophobic being even hinted at by Royals. So it maybe that attitudes are a bit more Neanderthal amongst a tiny minority of Sheffield United followers, or at the very least, they are less inhibited by the majority than here in Reading.

As for players coming out, I recall the racist abuse black players used to routinely suffer. A combination of many different things - changes in society, legal changes, but mostly fans not accepting it and reporting it - have made it (almost) a thing of the past in the UK. I would like to think the same thing would happen with any gay players in the men's game that came out.
