MATCHWATCH : Wigan Athletic (h)

When : Saturday March 28 2026, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Struggling Wigan pop in for their seasonal visit next for what will be either an expected home win or otherwise a right miserable “toys out of the pram” meltdown by most.

Now managed by the former Exeter boss (remember Exeter used to be really useful this season before he left them) Gary Caldwell, Wigan’s form has slowly picked up and the club has won four of its last eight games with just two defeats in that run - so don’t think that getting a win is nailed on, especially as Gary has already masterminded Exeter’s point here back in January. True, Wigan’s away form is pretty much still in the toilet (20th in that form table) but since he arrived Caldwell has got the latics to at least pick up a couple of points on their travels which is improvement on what their supporters had been getting previously and would probably be enough to cause the aforementioned meltdown amongst the Reading fans anyway.

Joe Taylor is the leading scorer with 9 goals but there’s been a good few chipping in like Fraser Murray, Callum Wright and loan striker Paul Mullin. On top of that youngster Harrison Bettoni looked fairly useful when Reading played in the reverse fixture so there will no doubt be plenty to keep what’s left of the Reading defence busy on the day.

And therein lies the problem, the injury list is getting worse. Randell Williams now has a hamstring problem so is unlikely to feature and while Daniel Kyerewaa may be fit enough again he’s unlikely to get anything more than a place on the bench, in addition Kadan Young has been included in the England U20 squad so is another that won’t be available.

Finally a win will push Reading back into the play off places which will look better though may be misleading as most clubs around will have at least a game in hand after not playing in the international break.

Referee

Steven “first 3rd tier game this season” Copeland

Previously

Historically

This is the 27th season the two clubs have shared with the first meeting being a 2-0 Reading win at Elm Park back on 26 August 1978, if anyone on this board was there on that day.

Of the previous 26 games Reading have won fifteen against Wigan’s seven. The biggest home win was 4-0 back in September 1992 while Wigan have managed three 3-0 away wins in their time (1989, 2013 & 2020).

Reading currently are on a roll of 2 wins and a draw from the last three Wigan visits though, so there’s something there to defend.

How to follow the game
  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an RoyalTV subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)
  5. Or you can always just go and get a ticket

It does seem Wigan have improved slightly since Caldwell took over but they're still pretty poor away from home and we're strong at home.

So, pretty obvious what will happen

Got a feeling we will be drumming on about Mr S Copelands inability to police the game properly.Expect him to be very picky about players proximity to the wall at free kicks.
Lose this one and it will really sting leading to a A Summers rebuild

Nice that someone remembered this match was going ahead. Every tweet this week from the club has been trying to push ticket sales & RoyalsTV Live event for the Lincoln Easter Monday 106 game yet not an ounce of effort on this.

Yep, amazed they didn't even do a courtesy confirmation that it was going ahead, given that all but one of our International Break games had previously been postponed.

Anyone actually bought tickets for the RoyalsTV Live 106 event? £15 seems a little punchy :?

I think we've been barely scraping those postponements if memory hasn't betrayed me and MoM was always one of those who brought our numbers up and he's back at Brighton now. Feel we'll be better getting this out of the way rather than having a build up of fixtures in the run-in, could be crucial in our play-off hopes.

All moot if we don't win this game really.

I have. £15 for a ninety minute one-off event is okay.

Tickets haven't shifted as quickly as I expected given the relatively limited nature of them (300). They still appear to have 53 left according to the ticket site.

Ward & Randell done for the season now but outside chance Roberts could make the bench.

Think now Reading will really have to dig deep and make some luck happen if they are to reach the POs. Personally think it won’t be so long before it’s more important to experiment with selections, formations and see which youngsters might be able to transition to the first team for next season rather than worry about league points.

We even used Basil Tuma getting called up by Malta to get the reverse game postponed, despite him only being involved in the matchday squad once or twice this season (and I'm counting cup matches in that).

Would rather just play games when scheduled than have the club trying to come up with methods of getting them postponed tbh, unless we've genuinely got three or four first team regulars on international duty.

I get it if we've got 3 or 4 regulars out injured and we think we'll do better playing later.

I guess its all about scraping results now! i feel its going to get even uglier to watch moving forward. This game really is a must win especially with Huddersfield and Lincoln following up and Cardiff still to play. Probably looking at needing 4 wins from 7 to be in the hunt?

Would go 4-3-3:

Pereira

Nyambe Williams O'Connor Yids

Wing Doyle Savage

Lane Long Kelvin Young

Have to go for the win so slightly more attacking 4-3-3 and then revert to the counter attacking style for Huddersfield and Lincoln.

Young is not available due international duty along with Sean Patton

Don’t get this being allowed to postpone games because you have players called up. You could have the same players out through injury but you couldn’t postpone the game you just have to get on with it. All top rugby sides are expected to still play fixtures when there are internationals so why not football clubs? Even more ridiculous when games get called off because one side has a youngster, who almost sat on the bench once, amongst those called up.

Even more intelligent would be to scrap stupid international breaks altogether and go back to meaningful qualification tournaments where countries just played one midweek fixture and you had to get it right, not just go through the motions knowing one of the many safety nets would see you alright. But that’s never going to happen sadly because £€$¥

Where did that come from then? No mention of any games being live then suddenly everything seems to be, even despite the 3pm Saturday blackout. :?

Think blackout only applies when there are premier league games.

Thought it was simply to encourage attendance at all levels, seems a bit pretentious to if it’s only when the PL are playing.

The good thing about playing on international breaks would encourage people to go and watch there local EFL club?
