Marriott, Ehibhatiomhan, style, ramblings

by Millsy » 02 Apr 2026 23:33

I was thinking about Ehibhatiomhan, one of my favourite players until he seemed to lose ability to be effective leading the line and better as a winger/wide attacker.

Then Marriott happened - one of the best strikers we've seen until he got injured and I for one thought we wouldn't get anyone close to that form.

Only for Ehibhatoman to rise to the challenge out of seemingly nowhere.

Is it that he learned from Marriott? (but their styles are different). Is it just coincidence that he found form at this crucial time? Is it that we are just playing a system that somehow makes strikers shine (explains why commonly players do well in a certina team then are crap when they move)? Or is it that Leam somehow works on people and draws the best out of them. Either way long may it conitnue.

Enough rambling, interested to read people's thoughts.

Presumably a sign of James Beattie being someone who knows what he’s doing.

Kelvin is 22. You’d expect him to keep improving at this point in his career. Especially when it’s not clear what his best position is yet. He was decent enough last two years as well considering his age. He has done well this season whenever he’s started tbh, the problem for him is Marriott always got picked ahead of him and then he’s attempting to impress in 15 min cameos when we’re either chasing the game or trying to hold on

People have judged him on underwhelming sub appearances rather than starts

No doubts Beattie has helped though, can see the improvement- esp in the air

Tall players are quite often not that good in the air, probably in some cases they have always been the big guy when growing up so didn't need to jump (unlike say Shane Long or Tim Cahill who both had a fantastic spring and timing and would beat much bigger players in the air).

It looks as though, as Sutekh says, James Beattie's influence has made a big difference as Kelvin has gone from a joke header of a ball to a threat within the space of a couple of months and is turning into the striker that previous managers and fans thought that he should be.
With Marriott out and the only real option for his position Kelvin has a real chance to shine and let's hope he carries on in the same vein as the past few weeks.

He has every chance to become a "proper" central striker-let's see if he has the desire to take it as it would greatly benefit both himself and our club.
