Pessimistic Reading fans

It's amazing how negative people have been this season. I'm sure some of you don't mean to be pessmistic. If you watched Reading in the eighties and early nineties, it might explain it.

However, take a look at the team over the past few years. First of all, the past five or six years have been the most successful in our club's history 135 year history. When I started watching Reading, we were happy if we ever got the chance to go the old second division. And then we'd aim for survival.

Since promotion on the last day of the season against Brentford, we've finished fourth, nine, seventh and first in the Championship (best ever run in the second tier), we got highest point total ever last year, almost got 100 goals, beaten the likes of Cardiff 5-1 and made it to the top flight for the first time ever.

Now we're in the top flight, we're in sixth place ahead of some top teams and we're level on points with former double winners Arsenal. This is a bloody dream come true, surely.

Yes, Watford was like watching an eighteenth century street football match, and yes we should've closed Emre down and therefore been third in the Premiership. The fact we're complaining about form shows how far we've come. Let's face it, a lot of us would've settled for 17th, and some of us probably still would!

These are great times and I'm f*cking proud to be a Reading fan. It may not last so make the most of it while it's still here.

A good post, but if I am honest, I don't need reminding how amazing the last few seasons have been, having lived through them.

Perhaps turn it around - despite saying last season how I would be happy with just one season in the Premiership, now, having made the start we have, I want us to stick around, become a Bolton or Villa, a comfortable Premiership side, and keep going forward.

When I first started watching Reading (a glory hunter after the Bolton play-off final) I dreamed of watching them in the Premiership. Now I dream of Europe.

The over all team playing well does not excuse those individual players currently playing below their level (as we saw last season) from being criticised for it.

Definately agree with your post, but villa is a poor example. They are well supported, have been hugely successful over the years(european cup), their expectation levels are big and they have been established for years. We are far more similar to clubs like fulham, bolton, middlesbrough,etc. Boro are the prime example of who I want us to become. Take out their poor season so far and im sure people would agree. Great youth academy producing dozens of highly rated youngseters notably downing, morisson, catermole, davies,etc, passionate english chairman who loves the club, the club was built gradually, moderate and achievable success( league cup, european qualification) and an average fanbase. We potentially could be bigger than they are in terms of support, infact we probably are so far on this seasons showing, but its how we progress as a club from next season that will make or break us. We need to buy correctly and if we have bad runs its time to pull together and support the manager who got us this far. I don't want to hear half this board moaning about coppell if we start next season in the prem with four or five defeats. We are who we are, and we have the chance to have a big future, we need loyal support and we can be a success. We are in dreamland so far and im enjoying every minute. How dare I come away from newcastle annoyed we aren't in a champions league spot, we are reading FFS.

Giving the way we went into decline after that play-off final, that bit of glory hunting backfired!

Think what you like mate, but it ain't. Sorry if you thought that - I just wanted to put it in perspective after the one of the posts complaining about our form and the Newcastle game.

What ARE you talking about? Everybody I know is still on Cloud Nine - both recent converts and old farts like me who can remember the grim days of the early '70's. We are not yet safe but if we can:
a) avoid too many injuries
b) bring in a few of the right sort in the right positions in January
c) prevent an exodus of our key players

we will be. Who wouldn't have settled for that in August?
