Re Sodje's sending off......

If Charlton are going to be successful in appealing against their man's red card for tugging an opposition's shirt (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 228213.stm ) then surely we should have appealed against Sodje's second yellow card?

Oh and apologies if this already has been discussed. My excuse is that I've been away and I welcome any dodds. I would also be happy to be shown a link to an existing appropriate thread.

Don't think you can appeal a second yellow, where as you can a straight red.

Can't appeal against it as the bans already been served. That and you can appeal against two yellow cards I believe.

A fair point, but surely the ban is now served and he was unlikely to feature against West Ham, so would it have been worth the bother ?

Neither the Charlton defender nor Sodje will be let off. Even if there were offsides preceding both decisions.

Charlton will go down, they were inept. Great performance from the Arsenal, you must have been pleased to see that.

I don't care about how Arsenal performed. I'm just saying that if the Charlton player gets off then it makes Sodje sending off look like a joke.

The sending off was a joke because the referee completely failed to apply the laws of the game correctly.

Rooney was offside from the pass the preceeded the Sodje shirt pull/tug. The shirt pull/tug by Sodje therefore took place during inactive play & was therefore irrelevent. The referee was also incorrect to award a free kick to Man Utd.

Also, had Ronney been onside Sodje would not have had to make the 'foul' to prevent the attack that he was cautioned for.

Im not sure Sodje has served his ban yet as the paperwork would not have reached the FA by New Years day.

What can they do though? Order replays of the Man Utd game and also the West Ham game for which he was banned?

In fact Im sure Sodje will be banned for the Burnley game.

There was an article in the Racing post on Saturday about how punters had backed certain Chelsea Players to get booked against Fulham, because it would have meant those players missed the FA Cup tie against Macclesfield and not the match at Villa.

So you would assume the same applies to Sodje. Unless both the RP and the punters were badly informed, which i doubt.

Thanks, but that takes away the clubs right to appeal a red card doesn't it?

Also, Paul Konchesky was sent off against Fulham but served his ban 2 games later against Man City.

If the ref deemed it a yellow card offence then I don't think it matters if play is "inactive", otherwise people could trip, punch, etc other players at times when play is "inactive" with no fear of being booked or sent off.

The only issue is whether or not the pull on Rooney warranted a yellow card.

FA gave special dispensation because it happened over the Xmas holiday period and the appeal couldn't be heard/considered before the next game when the suspension was due to kick in.

Mind you, if the FA expect players to work over the Xmas period, perhaps the old farts on their adjudication should also have to work!

I believe there are different types of offences some of which, like violent conduct, can and will be punished when play is 'inactive', others that won't. Afterall, you could hardly be booked for deliberate handball when the ball was out of play, or indeed when an offside decision had already been given!

All ways round the yellow card was the wrong decision by an incompetent referee and I only hope the assessor picked up on it.

The rules do not differentiate between "active" and "inactive" periods of play for cautionable offences.

Your handball example is not very good because obviously a player is allowed to touch the ball with his hands when it is "inactive", whereas holding or pushing a player is not allowed at anytime.

Whilst you may be technically correct about pushing or holding, why is it we don't see a multitude of yellow cards everytime players take positions before a corner is taken?!

Common sense has to apply and clearly the merchant Dean has absolutely zero common sense. Furthermore he compounded his incompetent display by neither signalling for a foul nor indicating that he was allowing advantage at the time Sodje supposedly committed the offence, which 'earned' him the second yellow.
