Dowie vs Reading

Did anyone see the BBC coverage of the Tamworth v Norwich match yesterday.

In the pre-amble, Iain Dowie was asked about his past in the cup, and I half heard him say something about a non-league match he played in against reading at Elm Park. He said he scored early on and then "Kevin Senior" (sic) went on to score three.

Anyone know what match that was, or was he making it all up?

At 16 Dowie was rejected by Southampton and went to the University of Hertfordshire to study for a Master's Degree in engineering. On completion he became an employee of British Aerospace, whilst keeping up football at non-league level playing for Cheshunt alongside his brother Bob. He left Cheshunt to build up his fitness and signed for Hendon.

While playing for Hendon, Dowie was spotted by Luton Town who snapped him up. An old-fashioned centre-forward, he then moved in quick succession to Fulham (a brief loan spell), and West Ham Utd

He then moved to Southampton, where he had over 100 appearances. He then moved back to London with Crystal Palace, which after they were relegated meant another spell at West Ham, and finally Queens Park Rangers, where he ended his days playing in defence, and being player-manager of QPR's reserve side.

Possibly Hendon?

88/89, Senior only got 1 though, dont recall that match but did go in the 70's when they beat us!!

I was at that Hendon game. Can vaguely rememebr Karl Elsey scoring but not a lot else. Must have been 88 or 89.

Now I appreciate that the University of Hertfordshire (sic) is probably not a bastion of engineering, but even THEY couldn't offer places on Master's Degree courses to a 16 year old surely? In my day (which would jhave been around the same time as Dowie), you neede A-levels to get to Univ, especially engineering courses.

Smacks of yet more lazy journos to me.

I was at that game against Hendon. Must admit I didn't realise it was Dowie that was playing that day, but why should I?

I was also at the two subsequent games against Maidstone, the second (replay) being played at the now defunct Dartford ground. Remember some Dartord Chav shouting at Trevor Senior right next to me on the touchline and Trev just giving him a great big toothless grin back. Those were the days.

(sic) indeed - it was Hatfield Poly back then. In addition to the A-levels, you'd also need a batchelor's degree to get on a master's course. It's no wonder the "profession" of journalism is so derided these days.

Apart from being 16, he would have been unable to go to the Unversity of Hertfordshire anyway since it did not exist then
