EXCLUSIVE - Royals in for Bertrand
By OAE - 03/07/2008 21:18
OffatEleven understands that Chelsea left back Ryan Bertrand will join the Royals on a season long loan deal, with a view to a permanent move, as soon as Nicky Shorey has left the club.
Whilst the lack of transfer activity so far has been disapointing, things could begin to hot up in the next week or so, and OffatEleven understands that we have already earmarked a replacement for Nicky Shorey, who is set to move to either Portsmouth or West Ham. Its been knowed for a long while that Shorey will depart as soon as our valuation is met and with the revelations that he declared his wish to leave last summer, it has become impossible for him to play for the club again.
Although his departure will be a sad end to a great career at the Mad Stad, fans can look forward to an exciting young player coming into replace him. Chelsea youngster Ryan Bertrand, 18, seems likely to seal a loan move as soon as Shorey is off the wage bill.
Bertrand spent last season on loan, firstly at League One club Oldham until January and then spent the remainder of the season at Championship Norwich, who were keen to extend the deal. The left back, who can also operate on the wing, started his career as a trainee at Gillingham before a move to Chelsea and has also had loans spells at Bournemouth.
He has also been capped at International level with England under 17's and under 19's and Stuart Pearce, the under 21's manager, is known to be a keen admirer.
Newly promoted Hull City were also rumoured to be interested but Bertrand would prefer to stay down South and would not have a problem of continuing his career in the Championship. If the Royals are promoted, he will seal a permanent move as his chances at Chelsea would appear seriously restricted by Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge.
Steve Coppell has already declared his desire to make better use of the loan market and will make Bertrand his first summer signing.
