STAR Survey

Just received an email from STAR asking me if i wanted to participate in their survey. We are told its purpose "is to help understand what STAR members and other Reading supporters think about STAR, about Reading FC and about football in general"

Hats off to STAR, the survey covers most footballing topics, asks for additional feedback and doesnt take that long to complete. Hopefully the feedback they get can be applied soon.

Dan. Thanks for the kind words and the good intentions - I've removed the link you posted, though, as one of the things which makes the survey valid is knowing exactly how many people were in the sample it was sent out to.

This gives us a lot more credibility in using the results, as from a known sample the data is a lot more valuable than from an unknown sample.

I was a touch confused by some of the options for answers though.

E.G. Sometimes and Occasionally as separate answers to the same question. My Collins English Dictionary gives the definition of occasionally as sometimes and vice versa.

Hmmm, I'd say that "sometmes" is a lot more frequent than "occasionally" - the latter is equivalent to "once in a blue moon." Plus the fact that they are on a scale gives you a context to see which is more/less frequent.

Problems in this area though:

Have I heard racist/homophobic abuse in the last two years/beforehand and home/away? Lots of yes answers to those questions but no opportunity to expand. Have I heard it frequently? Have I found it offensive?

There's a whole other survey there IMHO.

What will STAR do with this information?

You're right but we had to draw the line somewhere in the level of detail we were going into otherwise it would have taken hours to complete. This is essentially a first survey to establish the demographics and try to discover which issues are the important ones - i.e. find out what are people's most important issues and problems.

For example, on the racist abuse question you mention, if there is enough of an issue to investigate it further (that is a judgement call based on the percentage responses from this survey) then a future survey will go into a lot more detail.

What will we do with it? Well, when we talk to the club about issues we'll have a much better idea, backed by statistics, of what supporters think and again we can judge what are the most important issues for supporters and what are the least important. We can also get more sophisticated, and hopefully define what are the most important issues by age group, by stand, etc, etc.

This is also immensely useful to find out what people think about STAR and why they joined or didn't join, and what they think of what we do and the benefits we offer. Plus the "things we ought to take up with Reading FC" comments section is immensely enlightening - several themes are emerging that are obviously important to people, some of which we maybe wouldn't have thought of, and also some great ideas to put to the club that will improve things for everyone if implemented.

We'll also be publishing composite results results on the STAR web site in due course - not sure yet just how much as there's a lot of data coming in.
