Reading manager Steve Coppell has fuelled speculation he is chasing Middlesbrough pair Chris Riggott and Gary O’Neil after admitting he is in the market for players currently with the Gareth Southgate's relegation strugglers.

Coppell has also been a long-time admirer of Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead, while fringe players at Spurs, Newcastle and Manchester City remain on his radar ahead of Monday’s 5pm transfer deadline.

However, he admits he is facing an uphill battle to bring in some targets because of players’ reluctance to dop down to championship level.

Riggott enjoyed a short, but impressive loan spell in central defence for Stoke at the end of last season, while midfielder O’Neil played under Coppell at schoolboy level and has remained under consideration ever since.

His attempts to bolster the centre of his midfield would appear to increase the chances of Middlesborough succeeding with reported attempts to sign Reading midfielder James Harper, in a possible swap deal.


Coppell is also considering signing a new centre-half, and will have greater room for manoeuvre if Middlesborough follow up their interest in Reading old boy Ibrahima Sonko in what would be a strange musical chairs type centre-half transfer scramble.

Coppell is refusing to name names on his wish list, but did say: “We are looking to bring one or two in if we can. But we are competing with a lot of clubs and are trying to get players off clubs who are in a similar situation to ourselves and don’t want to sell so close to the deadline unless replacements are lined up.”

He added: “We have got to be a little bit more resilient throughout the middle of the pitch.”
