Why is he tough tackling? Whenever I have seen him he has been a creative, offensive midfielder - likes to stay fairly central and has an eye for goal. Perhaps my one criticism is that he is not very tough tackling...

Spot on, and I remember the time when these sorts of speculative posts punctuated The Team forum. For what its worth though, I think if a player played for Reading in our last competitive game (Harding) and the thread goes on to discuss team players in the last third of the season, it should be in The Team and not sent to General Football on a nitpicking technicality.

Not really, as a fair few have been actual rumours about us possibly signing players. They might turn out to be crap rumours, but there's a big difference between someone saying that they've heard/read that we are after a certain player, and someone just making a suggestion.

Truth be told, there's nothing at all wrong with discussing if a certain player (whether we've been linked with him or not) would be a good signing, but just don't dress it up as "speculation" because in the context of transfer speculation, it most certainly isn't.

Yes "speculation" may loosely be acceptable by the dictionary definition, but it equally applies to every single other thread of every message board in the history of the internet, which rather renders putting SPECULATION in capitals in the title rather pointless.

You'd have to show me these "fair few" then. The Cox and Little threads started as speculation, as a simple view of page 1 would show.

Anyway, that's the convention on here and has been for a long time. Seems to work well and be understood by most people.

Feel free to come up with an alternative signifier for threads about speculating whether random players might or might not be a good signings and what the benefits would be of changing.

how about just not adding "SPECULATION" in capitals, as if there's something of substance to it? If this had been just titled "Zheng Zhi?" would it have left mere mortals dumbfounded as to what it could be about?


I don't think there needs to be an official thread signifier, and if somebody really wants to dress up their own personal suggestion to try and make it sound important, then that's their perogative, but I would suggest "Trivial Opinionated Subjective Suggestion of Extra Recruitment", as handily the acronym comes out as T.O.S.S.E.R.

If it's a player we're linked with, then it's "rumour". If it's someone the fans want to speculate about, then it's "speculation".

The main reason for having a signifier is that if you're not interested in idle speculation about random players you don't have to bother opening such threads at all.

It obviously bothers you a lot, any particular reason?
