My take on it - although in the aftermath of defeat Ferguson is usually perfectly magnanimous he dismisses all notion of the prospect occurring, hence his bemused / amused reaction.

I think I'd expect him to say they were still looking good to go through the group which is all that matters until it's knock out and that they've done plenty so far, even if they haven't won every game. So he doesn't agree at all they're struggling.
