You never know until the season starts but the thought of yet another dull meaningless season in L1 is such a turn-off.

As odd as it sounds, I almost feel like I’m being asked to support a different team.

It feels like I’m being asked to become a Wycombe fan in a bigger stadium, wearing a different kit.

Maybe it’s just the reset we deserve, but it really feels like we’ve gone from expecting to be a solid mid-table Championship club to reverting back to the small-team mentality I remember when I first started watching in the late 70s.

I guess the journey was fun, but I don’t remember ever feeling as apathetic towards the club as I do at the moment.

Before 1970 I think Reading fans had accepted their lot having got the message that the succession ambitionless and potless owners had been selling so successfully for the 100 years they’d been owning the club.

The Thames Valley Royals attempt woke that support up to the fact that there might be something better to be had out there and since then it’s been a cycle of showing promise then completely failing to capitalise.

Now we’ve been utterly ruined by three successive terrible owners we’re lucky to still be here and are, indeed, are now being reset to the next expectation level hoping it will be something along the lines of a Brentford, Fulham or Bournemouth.

Issue this season will be that while we’re still one of the bigger sides in the division we’re up against some very big names at this level, plus a few sides that have been at higher levels more recently, therefore it is likely to be really challenging to get the best of the talent that might available over the summer.
