The shame is that (2) may well be right however the standard of refereeing ,now that it is fully professional in England , is anything but.Royal Rother wrote:1. VAR - Pain the arse at times, but it has largely eliminated howlers - and has proved Point 2.
2. The quality of referee’s assistants which is now mind-blowingly good.
Goes well with the pointless games though.South Coast Royal wrote:The shame is that (2) may well be right however the standard of refereeing ,now that it is fully professional in England , is anything but.Royal Rother wrote:1. I agree with the other poster about toilets but can't stand the pointless loud music and pointless loud announcer.

Yeah. In the 80s, not only could you not watch games from abroad, there was no way of even finding out the results.Pepe the Horseman wrote:Online ticketing.
Being able to watch every game from anywhere in the world.
I remember being on holiday as a yoot and waiting for the newbies to arrive to look at their English papers and find out the scores/transfer news etc. Wasn't even that long ago, but that's how I found out we signed Greg Halford.tmesis wrote:Yeah. The only time you got to find out what happened in foreign leagues was when you bought the Rothmans Yearbook, and flicked to page 750, or wherever the foreign league tables were listed.
I remember the magazine 90 minutes came out, and did the weekly scores and tables from around europe, and it seemed like a revelation that such a thing could happen. Then BSB, 'squarials' and all, came along, and started showing Serie A, in 90/91.
Now there's so much choice, including many leagues now being shown online.
But yes, overall, I'd saying being able to buy a burger that doesn't taste like it was boiled is a big change.
Teletext walked so Soccer Saturday could run.TiagoIlori wrote:The fact you can get minute by minute match updates without being in the same continent, let alone at the stadium.
Wasn’t that long ago when the best we had was teletext or later on, the BBC website if we wanted to find out the latest scores.
Ceefax was brilliant though, still wish it was a thing, much better than the irritating Saturday afternoon "pundit" fests you get now!TiagoIlori wrote:The fact you can get minute by minute match updates without being in the same continent, let alone at the stadium.

Our referee assistants are the best in the world. I loved running the line and far more enjoyable at a high level to refereeing as the pressure is off - however in my day it was not the scrutiny they get now.Royal Rother wrote:1.
