In April this year, Che Adams scored for Southampton during a minutes applause for fan Joe Godden, who had been killed in a hit and run.downloaded wrote:While watching Match of the Day, I noticed a game where the crowd held a minute of applause for a fan who had recently passed away.
It got me thinking—what happens if something significant occurs during that minute? A goal is the obvious example, but what about a penalty, a red card, or a serious foul?
Do you think players subconsciously ease off during a minute of applause? I can't recall any big incidents happening during one. Has anyone else noticed this or seen it happen?
Nothing. People will kick in to do whatever follows normally when there’s a goal, penalty, a red card or a serious foul.downloaded wrote:While watching Match of the Day, I noticed a game where the crowd held a minute of applause for a fan who had recently passed away.

Remember these are to show support for those affected by whatever as occurred. They might be relatively meaningless to you, but I bet they sure as hell aren't to those they relate to. I don't think Joe Godden's family (see above) thought 'well, we don't really want a minutes applause, it won't mean anything because they did one for another fan last year'.Sutekh wrote:Nothing. Best thing would be the opposition scoring while all the home support is applauding.
Agree with the sentiment that it’s getting a bit silly with so many minute’s applauses breaking out. Rather diminishes their meaning and overall effect.
Remember when it used to be a minute’s silence for such things - can remember the expertise at some clubs for holding random 45 minutes of silence.
Not heartless, it's just not something to 'dislike' really, is it? Join in, don't join in. It's just applause. Doesn't negatively affect anyone.Winston Biscuit wrote:maybe I am heartless, but I really dislike the whole minute applause on a specific minute for fans who have died stuff
I think over recent years it's got a bit too pervasive - it used to be all about people in the game who had died, but now it seems to happen at almost every game, often for people with only have a tangential connection.Sanguine wrote:Not heartless, it's just not something to 'dislike' really, is it? Well, it will often be people who have died suddenly or tragically, or people with a long connection with the club.Dirk Gently wrote:I think over recent years it's got a bit too pervasive - it used to be all about people in the game who had died, but now it seems to happen at almost every game, often for people with only have a tangential connection.Sanguine wrote:Not heartless, it's just not something to 'dislike' really, is it? I do find myself almost hoping the opposition score just to see what happens.Winston Biscuit wrote:maybe I am heartless, but I really dislike the whole minute applause on a specific minute for fans who have died stuff
Imagine this happens, and then VAR disallows itSanguine wrote:In April this year, Che Adams scored for Southampton during a minutes applause for fan Joe Godden, who had been killed in a hit and run.downloaded wrote:While watching Match of the Day, I noticed a game where the crowd held a minute of applause for a fan who had recently passed away.

Quite something.

+1 not a fan of gestures at football. All seems a bit stodgy and mawkish (i.e. scousey)Winston Biscuit wrote:maybe I am heartless, but I really dislike the whole minute applause on a specific minute for fans who have died stuff
I blame the demise of the match day programme, which would've previously been the natural place for a tribute to a lifelong fan.BRO_BOT wrote:+1 not a fan of gestures at football. Not annoyed. Just bemused (and a little bit sad) at how they're taking off and becoming so much more routine rather than being something special.genome wrote:I'm with Sangers on this one. Seems like being annoyed about something for the sake of being annoyed about something.
