Yeah, I miss the casual racism, constant threat if violence on the terraces, shit pitches, even shittier grounds, Dirty Leeds, police and club owners who treated fans with utmost contempt and England failing abjectly to qualify for any tournaments.

…..and in the spirit of a bit of balance:

Just turn up, pay at the gate
3pm Saturday kick-offs (miners strikes permitting)
Up close and personal with the pitchside players swapping banter
No £ky moving fixtures around
Bovril
Real personalities on the pitch not in the tv studios
Free car parking (allbeit, roadside at EP)
For those currently in the Premiership, ‘keeping your shirt on your back’ pricing
The Big Match
Evening Post ‘pink paper’ with all of the days results within minutes of full time.
Half-time scoreboards
No internet experts

Not that Brian and the boys ever bothered getting down to Elm Park for a game of course but get the idea. Like BBC on a Saturday evening, used to watch ITV on a Sunday, used to get Thunderbirds, the big match and then the Persuaders or Department S reruns. After which all up the local park/playing field for a kick about pretending to be Alan Hudson or Peter Marinello or Clyde Best or Stan Bowles etc.

I'll concede being able to rock up at 2:55, paying on the gate and the game being dominated by money but any enjoyment derived from the period is down to the rose tinted spectacles of youthful enthusiasm coupled with a frisson of uncertainty rather than any appreciation for the actual product on show or the conditions you had to endure.

In essence nothing has changed in that my fondness for any era is intrinsically linked to the success or otherwise of my team.

Oh, and I hated Brian Moore and his London big club bias.

Thats why we had Southern TV coverage (occasionally shoe horned in amongst the LTV game coverage)…..made my tv debut on The Big Match lol.
As for RTGs? nah, that’s just how it was, there was always the odd Robin Friday that popped-up occasionally.
