MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (a)

When : Friday April 3 2026, 3pm
Where : Accu Stadium, Stadium Way, Huddersfield, HD1 6PG
Capacity : 24,121

The first of the two game Easter programme pitches Reading up north for a lovely local trip out to see Huddersfield Town.

Depressingly Easter is likely to be total cr@p for the biscuiteers this season with a horrible away trip to play against a really quite decent Huddersfield being partnered with the unbeatable Lincoln City promotion bandwagon so can only suggest a few nicker on the opponents to try and brighten what possibly may otherwise be a football weekend to avoid.

On the other hand, with a decent showing and the rub of the green, who knows what might happen and the odds would be better for a Reading win or two anyway.

To give Reading encouragement Huddersfield haven’t been at their best of late and their recent form has tanked them right out of the play off positions after looking pretty very likely at around Christmas. Of the last 10 league games the terriers have won just 3 and drawn 3 so hardly the stuff to instil terror in opponents but then this time they’ll largely be as fresh as the proverbial daisy, having not kicked a ball in anger since 21st March thanks to the international break tedium.

And it’s not been much fun for Huddersfield fans over the last two or three seasons either as not only have they been downwardly bound through the divisions a bit quick for their liking they’ve also been through the managers with the current incumbent, Liam Manning, being the 2nd this season and the 7th in just 2 years (since the start of 2024)!

But it’s still likely Reading will have to be organised and resilient and able to produce something special to grab a win as, while Leo Castledine has long since returned to Middlesbrough, there’s still a pretty useful strike partnership in Alfie May and Bojan Radulovic to be put under tight control

Randell out but Kyerewaa and Roberts are both back. Keane seemed to make it through the Wigan game with no problems too so maybe Reading will be able to be unchanged, though Kadan Young and Sean Patton are both available again after the internationals.

Referee

Will Finnie

Previously

28 Jan 25 > Burton Albion 3-2 Reading
10 Aug 24 > Birmingham City 1-1 Reading
09 Apr 24 > Bristol Rovers 0-2 Reading
09 Jan 24 > Brighton U21 0-0 Reading (FL Trophy)
26 Aug 23 > Exeter City 2-1 Reading

Historically

This is just the twenty-eighth season Reading have shared with Huddersfield Town but all those seasons have been since 1975-76 as Huddersfield were busy claiming FA Cups and league titles while Reading were just fumbling their way around getting to know what the Football League was all about, and it took a little time for the Terriers to sink to the basement fourth Division.

The twenty-seven league games in Huddersfield have generated ten wins for Reading and thirteen for Huddersfield so history would seem to suggest a definitive result rather than another ****** draw, though a draw would probably be seen as decent by most at Reading. Recently though Reading have managed just one draw from the last three visits to this stadium. In addition there’s a cr@p record being built that needs to be broken, in that Reading have not scored a goal away at Huddersfield since Lucas Joao struck twice in the last win there back in January 2021.

Draw would probably be a good result, feel like a win though for some weird reason.

Whilst a draw isn't the end of the world, depending on results it will put the play-offs even further out of our hands. Hopefully we can take the confidence of a big win and decent performance (albeit against a poor side) into this one and get a win.

Yeah all about trying to pick up wins at this stage. Draws not especially useful

Saw Shaka save a penalty up in a 0-0 in their old ground in 92/93, went back up there the following 93/94 season for the first match of the season (which we won 3-0) and drunkenly stumbled into Ladbrokes near the ground pre-match and slapped £20 on Reading to win division three at a silly price, something like 20/1

Good times

Huddersfield are the only real rival we're playing. Obviously we need to be winning most of the games. For me Huddersfield is must not lose rather than must win.

We're not going to win them all, so we're likely to drop points somewhere, but losing to Huddersfield puts them back in the mix 1 point behind us. So I'd take a draw there.

Dropped (relatively) easy points at Bolton, Port Vale, Mansfield, Stevenage

Somehow still in the game.

There's a strong lesson there, as well as a learning point for the future.

Of those, the only really damaging one is Stevenage. Results against direct rivals are worth more than against teams we're not directly competing with.

Currently 1 point ahead of Stevenage with their 2 game advantage
Win vs Stevenage - 7 points clear of their 2 game advantage.
Draw vs Stevenage - 4 points clear of their 2 game advantage.

By contrast, beat Mansfield and we're only 4 points ahead of Stevenage, draw and it’s 2.

The Stevenage result was a disaster, particularly because they really weren't very good - just effective at stopping us playing and nicking goals from set pieces.

So since we completely bottled that I'm expecting more of the same at Huddersfield. At least this year I'm not travelling - last year I travelled but didn't bother going to the game given our results meant it was meaningless.

As others have games in hand, a win is really what we need, can’t see that mind you

It was the performance that worried me more than the result.
Didn't even get a touch in their box second half.
We looked like a park team compared to them.

It looks like we've sold about 1,300 for this one.

You'd think a minimum of 4 points from this weekend or season over, and this game is probably the more likely 3 points.

Feels a tall order, but bigger picture we're making good progress on and off the pitch and should be a serious force in 26/27.
