Ipswich

Reading sunk to 16th - their lowest placing in the Championship since the very start of the season with yet another league defeat away from home. The Royals looked set to pick up an away point until Ipswich scored with two minutes left to play to take a 2-1 win. Lucas Piazon and Ola John were both forced to sit the whole match on the bench as McDermott opted for Kermorgant, Robson-Kanu and Vydra. Ferdinand and Cooper played in the centre of defence with McShane also left on the bench. Reading's last away win was all the way back in September 2015 as Reading continue to struggle to pick up League points.

Overall Reading were disappointing again after poor, scrappy, first half performances from both teams. Ipswich got off the mark on 57 minutes after getting the ball in from the right, but their lead was short lived. Gareth McCleary was quickly involved after replacing Stephen Quinn on the hour mark and scored Reading's equaliser from the penalty spot on 69 minutes after Hal Robson-Kanu was taken down in the area. Reading looked like they might hang on but Ipswich finished the stronger and after a period of possession it was the home team that secured the win with a straight forward finish.

Well that was a pretty crap evening.... and that was before I got diverted 20 miles down the M20  We did not look good tonight, plenty of drive from Williams and Vydra but we just could not keep hold of the ball. Norwood had a poor game as did Cooper - time to bring back McShane. Hal huffed and puffed but was surprisingly (given his recent performances) muscled off the ball more than once. Kermy was dreadful although to be fair was probably not playing in his best position. Best chance came with about 15 minutes to go when McCleary got away down the right wing cut into the box but could not decide whether to shoot or try and…

Well that was a pretty crap evening.... glad to get back in the car and put the heating on, until the diversion ! Sorry - I misread that last bit as '...until division 1'. But it feels a bit that way at the moment!

Reading once again waiting until their a goal down before they look like a team with any purpose. Ipswich a reasonable opponent, can't expect to just win here but they were poor last night and there for the taking. But we just have no drive, no ambition and no hunger in the first halves of these football matches. It's all very well celebrating the fact we can come from behind and get back into games, but I want to see us not have to go behind in the first place. Subs once again turn Reading's performance around. Surely we have to start seeing this as more than a coincidence and set ourselves up properly from the start, no more…

Fair play to everyone who travelled from Reading for that one. The away attendance was 205. Not surprised at £32 a ticket for a midweek game away in Ipswich on the back of our recent form. I'm impressed it was even that many.

Quotes from the Press

Reading manager Brian McDermott:
"It was a sickener, it really was. But, I can't complain about the spirit and the commitment. It was a pretty ugly game, I knew what we'd be coming into tonight and that's what happened.

"I thought we might go on and win the game at 1-1 when we got the penalty, but it wasn't to be. Really disappointed. But everything in there, the spirit, the commitment, the guts. I can't have any complaints with that."
