It was the Royals fighting spirit which salvaged a point from a game which looked to have been lost twice in the final fifteen minutes. Having taken the lead in the first half with a magnificent long range effort rifled in by Leigertwood, Reading were outplayed and overrun in the second half by a slick passing Fulham side and found themselves behind after conceding twice with only fifteen minutes left to play. McCleary came off the bench to equalise only to see Fulham restore their lead with only a couple minutes of normal time remaining. Remarkably Robson-Kanu (also introduced as late substitute) prodded home from close range to send the home fans home happy, or should I say, relieved. So the crucial first win has not arrived, but at least another precious was point gained.

Throughout the game Fulham looked more comfortable on the ball, and their passing and movement left Reading chasing the ball all over the pitch. The Royals however looked dangerous on the break, and had Kebe been more willing to take players on and get behind the Fulham back four, they might have had more than one goal to show for their effort at the interval. Most of Fulham’s football was played in front of a very solid Reading defence and their goal attempts were from a long way out and too high or wide to trouble McCarthy. With Shorey and McAnuff linking up well, Reading posed more of a threat down the left. Pogrebnyak shaved the post early in the half after clever play and a delicate chip by Shorey had wrong footed the visitors defence and presented him with an opportunity to attack the ball in the six yard box. Pressure brought corners which were wasted with extremely poor delivery. The lead came when McAnuff cut inside and rolled a tempting square pass into the path of Leigertwood who responded with an unstoppable drive from just outside the box.

Reading began the second half on the front foot with Roberts bursting through on the right, but Fulham soon established a stranglehold in midfield. A goal seemed inevitable although when it came it was as much to do with shocking defending as the quality of Fulham’s play. Suddenly the Royals collectively switched off. Marking was non-existent and nobody took responsibility to put pressure on the ball. Substitute Luis took full advantage and the lead vanished with a finish to match Leigertwood’s earlier effort. Fulham then took the lead when Baird, who had almost scored following a free kick on the edge of the box glanced in a corner with a subtle header. Given Fulham’s dominance at that point, it looked to be all over as a few home fans made for the exit.

Brian McDermott made changes to bring about an unlikely comeback. On came Le Fondre, McCleary and Robson-Kanu to replace Tabb, Pogrebnyak and Kebe. Reading battled on and were rewarded with an equaliser from McCleary who snaffled up a half chance in the box. Fulham continued to torture the Royals defence with excellent passing and movement. Conceding once due to poor marking and concentration was regrettable, but to concede in such a manner twice was unforgiveable. Berbatov curled in a superbly placed strike following a slick move involving old boy Sidwell. Having worked hard to establish a lead and defended with such good levels of concentration and determination for so long it made falling behind again even harder to swallow. Gloom, anger and frustration briefly engulfed the Madjeski Stadium but the loyal home fans stayed to urge their team on. (Others preferred a place at the front of the bus queue or pole position in the car park.) Their reward was an unlikely equaliser almost on time when Robson-Kanu reacted quickest in a crowded penalty area to stab the ball over the line. Reading were not finished yet and Roberts drew a save from Schwatzer and then Robson-Kanu’s well directed header was scrambled away. Briefly, Reading looked like they were going to take all three points. That really would have been the icing on the cake.

Reading are going to have to fight long and hard to stay up this season and to do so must learn to keep the ball a lot better than they have in their last two games if only to relieve pressure on the back four. If they continue to squander possession as often and as easily as they did today in this league, McCarthy will be picking the ball out of the back of the net far too frequently.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Crazy. For an hour I thought we were good, held our own and looked fairly comfortable against a Fulham side that didn't do too much. However, the substitution of Ruiz turned the game on its head. They were completely in control and we looked scared in all honesty. The second was coming and sure enough it did. We didn't give up and pegged one back and our tails should have been up but instead we let them have another. Great last 5 minutes and could have won it at the end.

After 80 minutes would I have taken a point? Most definitely. But we can't afford to keep throwing games away, especially at home.

Is it just me or with pretty much every goal we've conceded recently can Cummings do better? He was the one closing down Ruiz for the 1st today (might be being a tad harsh, it was a great finish), lost Baird for the 2nd and got sucked to the ball and left Berbatov free for the third. Also thought he could have done better with Sterling's last week, Routledge's against Swansea and perhaps Ba's 1st at home to Newcastle (again top finish).

Also for anyone who thinks McDermott should go. Get real. All we need to do this season is finish 4th bottom. If we finish 4th bottom this season everyone would say he's a genius. At the moment we are 3rd bottom. So we are 1 place below where we want to be with 30 games of the season still to go. Lets put it into context, we're not aiming to finish 10th or anything, we're picking up points fairly consistently now. I know we haven't won yet but I truly believe we win one and we will certainly start picking up more. Now isn't the time to start getting on the teams back, now is the time to will them on and what a massive result 3 points at Loftus Road would be next week.

Oh dear. Second half was as poor as Tottenham, we barely had a kick of the ball for 30 minutes. Pretty abject really. And so very unenjoyable to watch. The worst 3-3 I have ever seen.

What on earth has Pearce done to fall behind the desperately poor Mariappa and Gorkss? Utter nonsense that is. Defensively we are excrutiating to watch, I think that the opposition are about to score score every time the ball comes into our half. Luckily Fulham were as poor at the back in those last 5 minutes as we were in the previous 85.

We have signed so very badly. Gunter doesn't get in the team, Guthrie doesn't get in the team. Gunter has been so bad that Shaun Cummings gets selected ahead of him. ALARM BELLS! How much have TSI really bothered investing?

The best thing about today was Chris Baird stacking it on the perimeter track after scoring. Even lying flat on his back he's probably better than Mariappa and Gorkss.

The positive: The team's fighting spirit and the fact they didn't give up.

However, when the false euphoria of twice coming back from the dead to grab a point subsides, reality should set in. Fact is, this was another two invaluable points thrown away. No doubt many of those who, this time last week, were confidently predicting Fulham would be our first win will now point to Fulham's form and position in the table and claim that we did really well to get a point!

Our midfield is just not good enough. I like Jay Tabb who could be described a a hardworking and good, honest professional but no way is he a Premier League player. Furthermore, as Legs noticeably tired, and started losing his men and gifting possession away like Christmas had arrived early, we had no one who could replace him. What is most annoying is that a player who could have brought some much needed attacking and tackling strength to our midfield is spending a lot of his time on the Fulham bench! Would Sidwell not have welcomed the chance of returning to us? Was he really not affordable?

And just what the hell does McDermott say to put the team to sleep at half-time?! In the first half workrate was tremendous, we were in Fulham's faces, passing was good (not just hoof) and we were in control of the game. Yet the team returned to the pitch after half-time and played like 11 zombies! That's how Fulham got back into the game and came away with a point. Maybe Brian would be better off staying in the dugout when the team go off for half-time!

Quotes from the Press

Reading's wait for a first Premier League win of the season goes on but there was a collective sense of relief and renewed determination in these parts after a late strike from Hal Robson-Kanu rescued a point for the hosts in a game of startling late drama.

Three goals in the last five minutes of play swung the contest this way and that, and at the end of it all, after everyone had regained their breath, Reading could reflect on a draw that sees them remain in the relegation zone but shows they at least have the stomach for the stern challenge of ensuring they do not slip out of the top flight at the first time of asking.

For Fulham there was little else but frustration. The visitors appeared to have secured the victory that would have seen them climb into the top four when Dimitar Berbatov gave them the lead for the second time in the match with a low right-foot shot on 88 minutes, but Martin Jol's men could not hold on and allowed Robson-Kanu, on as a substitute, to sweep home after Fulham's defence had failed to clear Nicky Shorey's free-kick. The collective angst in the visitors' ranks was obvious, particularly so as similar careless defending had allowed another substitute, Garath McCleary, to get Reading back to 2-2 only five minutes earlier.

"I thought we were going to win at the end," said Brian McDermott, whose side remain without a clean sheet as well as a victory this season. "But at 3-2 down, with the clock ticking, I guess you have to take the point. People will talk about the [first] win but we just have to keep playing the game. I'm proud of the group, they deserve a lot of respect for what they've achieved and I have no doubt they'll get that win soon enough. We're going to be OK."
