report
A late fight back was no where near enough as Reading slumped to another Premiership defeat. Kitson's late goal, from Nicky Shorey's free kick, was only Reading's third league goal of the season and it came when the home side had already wrapped up the win after looking the better side throughout. Despite a bright start, Reading struggled to compete against a lively Sunderland side and were lacking throughout. The Royals enjoyed plenty of the ball early on but created little up front, while Sunderland looked far more dangerous forcing Hahnemann into a couple of early saves.

On the half hour mark an impressive solo goal from Jones put Sunderland ahead. The Reading defence was turned inside out and the powerful shot gave Hahnemann no chance. It could have been more before the break but the Royals were spared by some poor finishing. After the break, there was no let up as Sunderland immediately doubled their lead after some disappointing Reading defender allowed Jones to cross for a simple finish in the centre. Reading had a penalty appeal turned down before Kitson's consolation.

QUOTES FROM THE PRESS

Without an away goal or a second-half strike to their name all season, Reading at the moment look a million miles away from the team that won so many new admirers last term.
They looked toothless up front until Bobby Convey came on, the American winger seeing his cross-shot just evade Kitson and the far post.
Reading finally got on the scoresheet five minutes from time when Kitson glanced in Nicky Shorey's free-kick, but it would have been undeniably harsh on Sunderland had Keane's men not taken all three points.

BBC Sport

...with Reading unlikely to repeat last season’s remarkable achievements at the top end of the table, this was the kind of victory, inspired by recent arrival Kenwyne Jones, that Sunderland needed to maintain the belief that they belong back in the limelight.
Sunday Times

After breaking a four-game losing streak, even Keane could not claim to be disappointed, despite the Reading forward Dave Kitson pinching a late consolation for the Royals five minutes from time. The Sunderland midfielder Ross Wallace had doubled the home team's advantage two minutes after half-time and, with Jones running riot, the result never looked in doubt. "It is a concern that we are in the bottom three," admitted the Reading manager, Steve Coppell. "It is a little bit oppressive. But we have to be big enough to accept the challenge and get ourselves out of it."
