Reading FC Match Report: 2020/2021 Season - Championship
READING 1 WYCOMBE 0
Reading: L Joao (63)
Wycombe: --
A moment of inspired forward play from Lucas Joao in the sixty-fourth minute was enough to see off a resilient Wycombe. The Reading striker controlled a long ball from Liam Moore on the edge of the Wycombe box, held off two defenders, and rifled a low shot past Allsop. It was Reading's first shot on target but it proved to be sufficient to lift Reading to the top off the Championship with a clear three point lead over second placed Bristol City. It was great result for the Royals but a far from convincing performance.
Wycombe started the game looking understandably low on confidence after five consecutive league defeats but Reading’s sluggish start gave them time to settle into the game. Wycombe pressed hard and made things difficult for Reading, and with Joao looking disinterested and off form, Reading were unable to gain any momentum going forward. Wycombe visibly grew in confidence as the game progressed. It was a scrappy first half to say the least with very little action in either attacking third of the field. Wycombe managed one tame shot on target. On the stroke of half time, Meite missed an absolute sitter for Reading when a cross from Ejaria found him unmarked at the far post. All that was required was decent contact on the ball, but with an open goal Meite glanced his header wide.
Meite was not having one of his better games. Immediately after the interval, whilst standing in an offside position got in Ejaria’s way as he ran onto to through ball on the edge of the box to deny Reading a scoring opportunity. Paunovic didn’t wait too long before making two decisive changes. Twelve minutes into the second half, off came Meite and Holmes (who had played extremely well) to be replaced by new recruits Sameda and Esteves. The substitutes made an immediate impact. Their pace, touch and movement provided a much needed injection of urgency, fluency and creativity going forward. Ironically Reading took the lead from a route one ball (albeit a very good one) from Liam Moore and a superb finish from Lucas Joao. Joao had burst into life for about ten minute following the substitutions but overall he had, to say the least, a quite a poor game by his recent standards. For a spell Reading looked as if they might over run Wycombe but to their credit they dug in and went looking for an equaliser with some conviction.
The enormous Akinfenwa was liberated from the bench and, although lacking in mobility, showed some nice touches without looking particularly dangerous. The last fifteen minutes and stoppage time were far from comfortable for Reading as they conceded some unnecessary free kicks allowing Wycombe to launch the ball into the Reading box. It took a very good save by Raphael from Odyedinma in the additional time to retain their fragile lead, but once again the Royals managed to keep a clean sheet and pick up three points. Reading have had an excellent start to the season and the new signings certainly appear to offer greater attacking potential, but they will need to be more dominant in games against the likes of Wycombe to be considered serious promotion contenders. For now things are certainly moving in the right direction.

Cue “you can only beat what’s in front of you” and “sign of a good team to win when you’re playing badly” but that was abject pretty much from start to finish. Fair play to Wycombe but I don’t think I’ve ever felt so negative after a win but if we play like that we won’t get too many more.

I thought Holmes had a solid game, didn't appear to me at least that he did anything wrong. But on this showing, Esteves needs to start.

Rafa - 7. Not much to do, brilliant save for the win
Holmes- 6 very solid especially in the box
Moore+Morro - 7 each. Very good. Clean sheet again.
Richards -5. Sorry, a bit of a liability but grew into the game.
Rino- 7. Very good
Laurent - 7. Very good
Olise - 6 did ok some good balls
Ejaria- 6, did ok some good movements. Clear penalty
Meite- 6 tried hard lots of balls to him for some reason but didn't quite come off for him. Missed free header (!)
Joao- 7 because he scored otherwise would've been 5. To be fair he had 3 men on him all game.
McIntyre. - dunno
Semedo- 7 some great play lots of energy. Did he change the game somehow? Scuffed a shot should've scored. Very bizarrely also had ball on left edge of box but ended up passing to right back. But very good otherwise.
Esteves - 8. Really looks something special just takes the ball and runs us into an attacking position. To outdo Holmes takes some doing. Real selection worry for Pauno.
Pauno- 7 half time talk clearly worked. Subs while surprising to a nobody like me probably worked somehow
Talking points
-clear penalty on Ejaria
- who the flying flamingo was that massive f**koff chunk of a bodybuilder for Wycombe up front. Wtf??????

IMHO
Rafa 8 For the save.Little to do really.
Holmes 5 Bit of a mess .
Morrison 7 No alarms.
Moore 6 Typically one horror moment 1st half. But very physical when he needed to be.
Richards 5 Real mixed bag. Some very poor moments, mixed with a lot of drive and purpose.
Rino 6 Hardly in the game.
Laurent 6 Ditto
Ejaria 5 Needs to improve his fitness.Whats this his third season with us,and little or no positive change as he gets older.
Olise 7 Not in the game enough, but everything he did was quality.
Meite 4 Bad miss. Then 2nd half should have left it to Ejaria instead of interfering when offside.Sometimes he does look very limited.
Jao 7 For the goal.
MCIntire Very negative move by Pauno.Alukho would have kept Wycombe on the back foot.
Semedo Looks like another Jao.Lazy, but capable of real quality.
Esteve Very impressive.A real full back.Looks like a top class player.Fast ,can see a pass, good on the ball and nicking in with tackles.
Ref.Did ok.But three or four odd decisions.
We will and can play better.

Second half was better but only a bit. Saved by a long punt forward and a great bit of skill from Joao
The subs did make a difference but that was also because Wycombe stopped playing spoiling tactics and tried to score, they nearly did at the end bar a great save from Rafael.

Bang on.
Holmes did nothing wrong, absolutely solid which I can't fault. Fabulous brick wall and perfectly fine with the ball in attack; but Esteves' movement off the ball looked edgy and dangerous. The easiest way I can describe it is that Holmes looks like a very good central defender (which is what he naturally is) and Esteves looks more like a fullback.
It's tough on Holmes because he's done an admirable job.

Holmes - 6 thought he was fine personally, still not a RB
Richards - 6 not exactly tested hard but didn't have a great game.
Morrison - 7 fine
Moore - 7 fine
Laurent - 6 AWOL first half much improved second, picked up Akinfenwa with Moore
Rino - 7 far from his best, but ok
Olise - 7 probably our best player first half
Meite - 6 should have scored and didn't do a lot
Ejaria - 6 overplayed a fair bit, looked dangerous but didn't deliver a lot
Joao - 6 awful first half, decent 20 minutes second half, scored, then poor again but he won the game and that's now 6 goals
Semedo - 7 looks quality but didn't really stamp his authority on the match
Estevez - 7 looks quality
McIntyre - N/A
Wycombe did ok, but look very limited as you'd expect. Long old season for them.
We move on.

As already commented both subs improved the team significantly and both should start on Saturday. Some decent football played while they were on. First half atrocious again. It is possible to win matches in the first half someone should tell our lot.
Being a bit sharper especially from the off and we could be having a really good season. Though Watford is the only real test we’ve had so far.

Holmes- 5. Really not a right back I’m afraid.
Moore & Morro- 7. Restricted Wycombe to half chances and they definitely deserve the credit for that.
Richards- 5. Game to forget, it happens. Better luck next game.
Rino & Laurent- 6 solid, weren’t at their best but they ultimately helped us down our flanks when needed to.
Meite- 4. Terrible game. Worst game in a Reading shirt for me.
Ejaria- 5. Looked bright but like too many members of the team ultimately disappointed.
Olise- 6. Played well down the right hand flank when Meite came off. Uninspiring otherwise.
Joao- 5. He looked like he won a competition tonight. Only escapes from a 4 because he won us the game.
Semedo- 6. Looked great coming on, caused lots of problems.
Esteves- 6. Big contrast to Holmes, looked much more comfortable going forward. Not sold on him completely defensively, thought he was a bit iffy.
