Reading FC Match Report: 2017/2018 Season - Championship
READING 0 MIDDLESBRO 2
Reading: --
Middlesbro: G Leadbitter (14, pen), B Assombalonga (74)
The Royals inability to find the net resulted in yet another disappointing defeat this time at home to a Middlesbrough side also in poor run of form. The stadium emptied soon after the visitors scored their second and crucial goal with a little over fifteen minutes left to play. It has become an all too familiar pattern of possession football with no end product from Reading. Defeat was compounded by a serious head injury to Ilori after twenty-eight minutes when he collided with Liam Moore as both players attempted to head the ball clear on the edge of the penalty area. Reading have now lost over half of their opening thirteen fixtures and although the defence has been generally quite slid a meagre return of only eleven goals has seen worryingly them slide down the table.
Reading started the game brightly and for the opening twenty minutes there was a refreshing intensity about their play. With Bodvarsson unavailable Smith was given his chance to lead the attack after Stam’s recent failed experiments with other squad members playing out of position to fulfil the role. The young forward contributed a couple of neat touches in the opening spell. All was well until the fourteenth minute when Assombalonga took full advantage of a poorly timed challenge in the box by Van den Berg to tumble for a penalty. Leadbitter rifled the spot kick high into the net giving Manone no chance to put ‘Boro ahead. Going behind so early leaves plenty of time to recover but with Reading’s poor scoring record this season a comeback seemed a tall order. A slick exchange of passes ended with Aluko shooting wide of the target but Reading struggled to create chances. Things got worse for Reading when a clash of heads between Moore and Ilori resulted in a lengthy delay and both players leaving the pitch for treatment.
Moore was motionless for some time but gamely returned with a dressing to protect his stitched wound. Ilori initially got to his feet but looked extremely unsteady on his feet and eventually sat down and left the pitch on a stretcher. He did not return and by all accounts will be absent for a couple of weeks at least. The defence re-shuffled with McShane coming back into the centre of defence and Blackett coming on to replace Ilori and slotting in at left back. Not sure McShane was entirely comfortable at right back anyway. Reading showed willing but 'Boro were tough to break down and Assomolonga was being a pain, diving and falling over. McShane got wound up by his antics and received a yellow card. Assombalonga had to wait until the second half to receive his deserved yellow card. Just before half time Gunter delivered a decent near post cross for Smith but although his header was well directed it drifted wide of the far post.
Undeterred by their difficult first half Reading pressed forward in search of an equaliser and did muster a couple of shots on target. Smith made room for a strike from the edge of the box which had Randolf scrambling after failing to gather the shot. Swift also manged to draw a save from a similar position but this time Randolf gathered the effort comfortably. For all their possession Reading lacked penetration. The game was settled after seventy-four minutes when Gunter inexplicably let Assombolonga run into box unmarked and Howson found him with a good cross right in front of goal. He could hardly miss and he didn't. McShane’s frustration at the defensive lapse expressed the feelings of the home fans perfectly – anger and frustration.
One small crumb of comfort for Reading fans was the return of Yann Kermorgant who immediately made his presence felt with a good pass inside the full back and a winning headers around the 'Boro box. Sadly though even he seemed to have been afflicted by the loss of scoring touch when he blasted over from close range when the ball dropped at his feet following a corner in the last minute.
Reading desperately to stop the rot with a home win against Forest on Halloween. A scary prospect following Forest’s away win at Hull today!!

Beaten at home by a poor team like Middlesbrough. This is now starting to remind me of the Terry Bullivant year where poor sides would regularly rock up to Elm Park collect their three points and go home again without breaking sweat.
And Aluko and Beerens get to start while Barrow is on the bench and Popa is yet again nowhere to be seen.
Not too bad for the whole of the first 10 minutes which had you thinking that just perhaps a corner was being turned then Berg turns up where he should never ever turn up and gives away a penalty and that was that, Reading went back to their standard “don’t panic” football and posed about as much threat as a one legged man in an arse kicking competition.
Second goal was another piece of pathetic defending with Blackett not awake again and no-one bothering to pick up the run of Asombalonga but by then it was all over anyway with Reading having already used up their regulation shot on target
Thought Smith did really really well being an inexperienced youngster and shows good promise. Such as shame the rest of the team carry no attacking threat whatsoever despite being packed full of tricky wingers and players with an eye for a defence splitting pass.
Something’s very wrong somewhere Jaap and I think fat ladies are being auditioned.
Lastly, best wishes to Tiago really hope he’s back up and playing soon

I've left a game early 3 times in my life, but today i just could see out the final whistle and went for a piss instead. Says it all really
Just how bad was Blackett for the second? Admittedly not helped, but still. How was he ever in the prem for such a big club?
// one more thing.....why doesn't Gunter play like that more often? He had some real great momenta today before we went back to a flat back 4

Last week it was direct footy with no striker. This time, a striker making runs but we play slow and ponderous
......and has all the oomph been trained out of Kelly?
Less said about Aluko the better

Think Gunter or McShane hit a ball like that in the first half that Smith did brilliantly with but you’re right other than that no one bothered to try and do that.
Should have stayed home and watched Danny Loader and England win the U17 world cup (5-2 v Spain from 2-0 down apparently)

We were ok until they scored without looking particularly good but once they scored it was all over
Stam’s tactics are an absolute mess. Aluko and Beerens seem to have free reign to do whatever they want and don’t do it very well. Leaves us totally unbalanced on the wings.
Some ratings:
Mannone 6: very little to do, nice save from a 1 on 1 - but felt maybe wrongly he could have claimed the cross for the second
McShane 4: Poor I thought. Looks very shakey at the moment
Moore 6: Reasonable game. Brave to come back in etc
Ilori 6: Doing pretty well until nasty injury
Gunter 7: Good. That run and cross - prob highlight of the match for us
Joey 4: Poor passing. Unambitious, gave away pen
Kelly 4: Shadow of the player he was last year.
Swift 6: Did some nice stuff. Looked our biggest threat imo
Aluko 4: Good player, terrible positional discipline. Many times we had the ball and there was no one right wing coz he was arsing around in CM.
Beerens 5: couple of ok crosses. A winger for a 442 not a 433
Smith 7: did everything asked of him. Well done to the lad, impressed
Barrow 6: lively
Blackett 6: thought he was ok actually. Shape was better when he was on
Yann 6: looked sharp, Stam needs him back
Stam 2: Lowest ebb. Is starting to play whoever the press suggest (ie Smith) without really adapting to who he puts in. Allowing Aluko and Beerens to lose shape. Constant and repeated lack of concentration at the back. Should have started Barrow and put on Yann 15 earlier. And wtf is going on in training - another injury presumably to Bacuna

The penalty was in a sense self inflicted. Terrible pass from Swift. Beerans (jogging as usual) making no attempt to win the ball back. Cross not blocked. Clumsy challenge by JVB.
There's something badly wrong at the club. Not just Stam. Or the style of play. The recruitment policy has been dire. Bar a couple of players, this squad lacks tenacity and spirit. Too many journeyman.
As much as I think you are a good guy Stam. Your tactics have been sussed. Lose Tuesday night and you'll be gone.

But that’s the problem - he shouldn’t be. He should be out in the wing giving an outlet and pushing on the fullback. We have 3 CMs we really do not need another one
Remember at one point seeing Kelly right wing and Aluko about 20 yards behind him in some sort of right half position - this when we had the ball. It’s just a mess

I did, and, boy, am I glad I made that choice, unfortunately no Danny though

Too many championship journeymen who have not tasted success in recent years which can only harm the fragile confidence in the squad. A marquee signing who cashes in and his talent is wasted in the heavy mud of central midfield. A constant stream of random squad fillers making our squad more bloated that old arry in his pomp. Squad fillers that either are so far off the pace(wieser, clement) or those with promise(pops, barrow) that don’t get a look in.
Just what our transfer policy is nowadays is anyone’s guess-it’s a collective responsibility though. Coming back to earlier yes the injuries are ridiculous, but like under bullivant and burns when we had the same serious issues, these things are compounded by the squad put in place, the tactics employed and the manager who selects his first 11. Forest surely a must win...

I shall be in the DB for the Wolves game though. That should be fun! I don't expect Stam to be in office by then, and frankly Tevreden should follow him out the door.
Although I suppose things could be worse - the Chinese owners could parachute in a Chinese manager from the Chinese Super League. Perish the thought.

A complete shambles is putting it mildly.
Why was Mcshane playing right Back?
Players going for the same ball because they weren't sure where they were playing.
At one point Kelly was last man, then VDB.
Barrow on the bench and Beerens starting WTF!
An utter utter mess.
I could go on and on.
He then comes up with a load of absolute tosh in his post match press conference
I'm beginning to think Stam is having a laugh at our expense. He doesn't care. He gets the sack and then gets compensated to the tune of millions in order to pay of his contract. We the fans, then suffer the indignity of playing in the lower leagues whilst he adds to his millions doing Media shit.
FUMING!
Get out now!

I think he signed a new 2 yr contract at the start of this season, which presumably was on better terms than his first contract due to the 3rd place finish last season. No idea what his basic salary is though. Surely it can't be more than 10k a week (c.500k a year?) for a total novice. Frankly if it's that, burning £1M to get rid, whilst galling, would be cheaper than slipping into League 1 playing non-football.
Haha maybe do a Crowd Funding exercise. Judging by the reaction to today's game, I doubt it would take long to reach the target!

First half was alright, tbf. Second was an utter shambles. LOL @ us breaking with pace in the second half, then slowing it right down as we reached their penalty box and PASSING IT BACKWARDS. No one IN THE ENTIRE FOOTBALLING WORLD plays like this. NO ONE. If Stam isn't gone by the time the Forest game starts, you can count me out*
*I still may not be able to walk by then
**See you Tuesday

Mannone - 4. Shit distribution and poor for the 2nd. I don't rate him that highly and think Jaakkola should actually get a chance
Gunter - 6. Was ok but made some errors. Gets an extra point for his quality run and cross where Smith nearly scored. He needs to do that more often
Moore - 5. Pretty meh, likely affected by the blow to the head. Should have marked better for the 2nd
Tiago - 4 He was pretty poor until the unfortunate clash. Hopefully he won't be out for long
McShane - 5 Seemed ok at times. Could have handled the sledging with Assombalonga better considering he is our captain
Beerens - 3. Poor, couldn't get past his man. He's slow and brings little to the team. He needs to be dropped
Van den Berg - 4. Some ok play but what was he doing for the penalty incident. So unnecessary
Kelly - 4. Shadow of the player he was last season. I think Boro need credit on how they countered him. They dropped players back near ours on the wings and up front when he had the ball. He's too predictable and needs to learn to mix his game up
Swift - 3. Pathetic. The less said the better. He's so much better than what he showed today
Aluko - 4. Poor too, doesn't help that he is out of position
Smith - 7. Showed plenty of passion and energy with some good runs. Unlucky not to score today but I thought he did look lightweight. He gets a 7 for effort
Subs
Blackett - 2 Needs to look hard at himself. Such poor concentration and its so concerning. Hope Stam doesn't start him Tuesday
Barrow - 6 Lively but didn't get enough of the ball
Kermorgant - 6 Had a difficult chance to score. He needs to hit the ground running and its concerning how reliant we are on him considering his age and fragility from his injury
Boro - worst side who have come to our ground (except maybe Hull).
Referee - shocking. Britt Assombalonga deserved a 2nd yellow
Next games line up (3-5-2): Jaakkola, Gunter, McShane, Moore, Aluko, Kelly, Swift, Evans, Barrow, Smith, Kermorgant

I understand the frustration but I thought there was a marked improvement from the players. They seemed up for it for much of the match despite going down to a penalty I had thought was unfortunate to be given against us.
Mannone pulled off one good save and was god with the ball at his feet but he probably could have done better for the second goal.
Defensively we were stronger in attack than we were in defense which was a little disappointing. I dont think its great when the only good notes I made about our defenders were that they helped the attacks well.
Our midfield seemed a little unbalanced which allowed Boro to sneak through a little more than I would have liked.
Beerens didnt really offer much.
Aluko was all over the shop..
Contrary to what most of you have said I thought Smith was completely average. He made one good run early on in the first half then did nothing for the rest of the game of any value. I didnt think he moved well off the ball at all and twice (in my memory) ran the wrong way without looking for the pass. I call that poor anticipation but it seems many of you are suggesting the tactics were at fault.
I honestly thought after the game I would see a lot of comments on here admitting perhaps the 19 year old striker isnt the answer.

It’s just so fcuking boring watching us these days - everyone looks like they’re wading through treacle when we have the ball. I end up longing for the opposition to get the ball because at least it’ll then be moved around quickly.
As others have said I just can’t understand our recruitment policy over the summer - just endless midfielders signed, no sign of backup full backs never mind new forwards. Mind you given how toilet Swift and Kelly were today maybe it was the right thing to do.

But teams just set up against us so easily these days. Boro didn’t press - they just sat back, scored their first 2 chances and sat back and had their easiest game of the season

Really? Two shots in the whole of the half from a home team? I thought Smith did brilliant putting himself about, didn't achieve much but sadly the rubbish supply of ball he got didn't help. I can't see how today was an improvement in any shape or form, we lost to a team who quit frankly arnt that good.
All I could think of watching us today was that fantastic game last night between Leeds and Sheffield and how I wish we could have a manager like them that can generate excitement and passion in his team. I wouldn't mind finishing mid table if we played football like that.....instead we play this turgid, dull, uninspiring crap......
