Transfer Deadline Day - Rumours And Discussion

01 February 2016
By Hob Nob Anyone?

It's January transfer deadline day once again, but it is expected to be much quieter for Reading this time around after the recent arrivals of Deniss Rakels, Yann Kermorgant and George Evans. Brian McDermott has hinted that he is unlikely to be adding to his squad today as the transfer window closes. Reading fans aren't expecting any new signings with nearly two thirds of fans expecting the Royals to fail to sign anyone before the end of the day. However, over 20 percent are still expecting McDermott to pick up at least one new player.

The biggest rumour of the day so far is that Swansea City are interested in signing Danny Williams and have put in an offer to get the player. Williams was also linked with Middlesbrough earlier in the month after a good run of form for Reading. Williams was very impressive at the weekend during Reading's 4-0 victory over Walsall in the FA Cup, creating the second goal with a superb pass in for Quinn to cross, and scoring a fine goal after a run from the half way line. There currently appears to be little substance to the rumour, and it's likely to be the first of many as the day goes on.

Joining Williams on the "unlikely" rumour list is the arrival of goalkeeper Julian Speroni on loan from Crystal Palace. Manager Alan Pardew has already ruled out the goalkeeper moving even though he has failed to get any first team action this season. With that rumour dead it has moved on to former Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy arriving on loan. McCarthy joined Palace for 3.5 million in the summer from QPR and made six appearances at the start of the season before losing his place.

Staying with Crystal Palace, there is another vague rumour that Alan Pardew may be interested in defender Jake Cooper. At just 20 years old Cooper is bound to attract rumours with his obvious potential, and other clubs including Stoke have also been quoted as taking a look.

Think our squad is good enough for now depending on departures.

Reckon we will see 1 in 1 out.

They have already said we're not going to be signing anymore players, I reckon that will be how it turns out.

Cox out on loan. That's it.

Our squads fine. Can't see us signing anyone.

We maybe could use a backup right back, but I don't see it happening.

He is not actively chasing anyone however if someone significant becomes available then there is money there, right back cover was looked at earlier in the window and believe this is the only position he is looking at. do not be surprised though if a keeper becomes available somewhere for us not to act.

Depends what you class as good enough for...

Good enough to not get relegated...YES

Sky Sports stating Williams to Swansea - fee agreed. Now down to player. Big loss if he goes.

Sky Sports stating no fee agreed -

Not what the woman live at the ground has just said - TWICE!

Fee agreed, down to player.

that link has a quote from her - 'nothing is agreed'. I refuse to ever switch on SSN so can't be sure if they are completely misquoting her.

If he does go, I really hope we have a replacement lined up. Nobody currently in our squad that's as box to box as Williams is.

Could Norwood play forward and the new Norwood QB?

Not saying they could, just asking

You have been writing 'QB' in a lot of your posts recently.

what does it even mean?

Quarter Back

As this is is becoming (as it was inevitably going to) a rumour and speculation thread it's off to the other place.

Pretty sure Norwood would be better going further forward. Evans would then replace Norwood as CDM. At the time we signed Evans I thought the only reason he was coming in was to replace Williams. I wouldn't be too disappointed if Williams left.

Putting Norwood further forward would be going backwards imo.

Could Quinn not fill Danny's place?

Better passer of the ball, can be attacking minded. Not quite as strong on the ball, but a better all round player imo.

a bit less sideways maybe

Brian also said we are not interested in le fondre the day before we signed him....

 Super Kevin Bremner!

» 01 Feb 2016 10:33

If we do sell Williams today I'm guessing that we'll get a decent 7 figure fee for him.

That being the case Marcus Maddison at Peterborough would be an awesome signing, out of the Nick Blackman mold. Darragh Mac has said a Chump club are extremely interested in him.

Isn't that what Evans says his best role is? According to his interview anyway.

Unlike many, I do think we'll miss him. Certainly short term but if it allows us to offer extended deals to the likes of Norwood and renewed deals to those out of contract in the summer who we want to keep then I can see the logic.

Daily Mirror linking us with Julian Speroni but dependant on other keeper movement.

If we're gonna take a keeper off Palace, then it sure has hell best be that young English fella.

Evev our own Brian has been known to bullshit about signings.

I never really saw the big deal about him but everyone at that club raves about him and says about how big an impact he has off the pitch. If that't the case then get him in.

If not Gabor Kiraly with grey joggers.
