Match Report

Reading
N Blackman (26)
Rotherham
D Collins (48)
Reading were forced to settle for a single point at Rotherham United, despite leading at half time thanks to a first class goal from the Championship's leading goalscorer Nick Blackman. The draw ended Reading's run of four straight wins and saw them move down one place to third in the table. At full time the draw was probably a fair reflection of the match as Reading dominated the first half but saw the home side improve dramatically in the second period to earn the draw. However, it may still be seen a two points dropped rather than one gained as Reading failed to finish off a side struggling at the foot of the table.

As expected Vydra made a return to the team - but had to settle for a place on the bench, making an appearance after an hour. However Jordan Obita and Aaron Tshibola were both missing through unexpected injury and joined Ferdinand, Quinn and Robson-Kanu on the sidelines. Speaking after the match Reading manager Steve Clarke confirmed that both Quinn and Robson-Kanu's injury were worse that had been previously reported with the players out for between two and three months. Taylor took the place of Obita at left back and Danny Williams was back in midfield. Both players were more than adequate replacements, however Rotherham enjoyed more chances than other teams have against the Royals recently, and the second half goal conceeded was a rare lapse in Reading's defending that has been so excellent this season to date.

Nick Blackman continued his goal a game strike rate, making it ten goals in ten games, in some style on 26 minutes. Oliver Norwood provided a long pass in front of Blackman who chested it down before letting fly with a powerful long range effort that flew into the top of the net. Reading were then content to string together pass after pass for most of the first half and went into the break looking very comfortable, and a Reading victory seemed by far the most likely outcome. Rotherham had other ideas and found themselves level three minutes after the break. Reading failed to deal with the home side's corner and Rotherham's Collins found himself unmarked in the middle of the box with all the time he wanted to send his shot past Ali Al Habsi in the Reading goal.

Rotherham gathered momentum and Al Habsi had more action than he's had in either of the past two fixtures. He made a couple of decent saves to keep Reading in the game as it looked like Rotherham could take all the points. Down the other end Vydra had opportunities to turn the game back Reading's way but looked rusty and failed to seriously trouble the Rotherham goalkeeper. In stoppage time it was that man Nick Blackman who again might have salvaged a victory, doing well to break into the area and getting a shot in - however it was blocked and spun away to safety leaving both sides sharing the points.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Overall pleased with a point. We never win at Rotherham anyway! First half we bossed it, but didn't really create that much. Cracking goal by Blackman... especially as he made Camp look stupid. Rotherham sat very deep, but still had their moments, which should have warned us. 2nd half was a much more even game. Awful defending for their goal, but we created more when they actually started trying to play beyond their own box. I'm happy with a point. Certainly a better trip than in April!

Thought a draw was a fair result. Great goal, both the ball from Norwood and superb finish by Blackman. Al Habsi had a very good game. A couple of good saves and looked solid with his catching.

Could tell Vydra was short on match practice, but would like to see him start instead of Piazon on Sat, who didn't really do much wrong, but just doesn't do enough to justify a start imo.
Hector my MOM.

Happy enough with the draw, looked like we might end up with nothing at one point. Their goal early in the second half probably did not help but we were a bit complacent at times - Gunter and Williams both made some poor short passes.

Piazon may not quite be up to the pace of the Championship but he can thread a pass, Hurtado was pretty much anonymous when he replaced him. I thought Vydra looked sharp enough and could have snatched a winner.

I agree Hector was definitely man of the match but Sa's theatrical rolling around was just embarassing

Quotes from the Press

Tony Andreu and Matt Derbyshire had decent early chances for Rotherham before Blackman opened the scoring. The highly rated striker excellently took Oliver Norwood's ball into his stride and thundered a shot into the top left corner for his 10th goal in as many games.

The Millers' Jonson Clarke-Harris had a shot which just went wide of Ali Al-Habsi's post shortly before half-time as Rotherham tried to find an equaliser. But it was not long before they did find a breakthrough as Collins was left alone at the far post to strike a corner into the ground and over Al-Habsi.

The Oman international - one of 11 different nationalities to feature for the Royals - made a great save from Clarke-Harris four minutes later as Rotherham's confidence improved, before making another excellent stop from Thorpe after a scramble in front of the Reading goal.

Reading substitute Matej Vydra had a couple of chances near the end but the Watford loanee could not find his first goal of the season.

Reading manager Steve Clarke:
"I thought we had decent control in the first half, the second goal in the game was going to be crucial and obviously it went to Rotherham. Credit to Rotherham I thought they were excellent tonight, especially in the second half.

"We have had a good run of wins, that keeps the unbeaten run going, it's tough to go anywhere in the Championship. There's no gimmes and this game proved it, we're happy to take the point."
