Reading's season took another turn for the worse with a second successive defeat against a relegation rival. After Wigan took the win in stoppage time at the weekend, there was more late disappointment as Reading missed out on a point after Aston Villa scored the only goal of the game with ten minutes left to play. The result sees Aston Villa climb out of the bottom three and leaves Reading four points adrift. With Manchester United next up Reading fans are going to have to get used to life in the relegation zone.

In an uneventful, scrappy encounter between two sides in the bottom three there were few chances of real merit in the first half. Reading's games this season have a habit of coming to life in the second half and the limited drama in this game took place then. Le Fondre should have put Reading ahead on the hour when he failed to get his header on target from Shorey's corner. Reading threatened from a couple of corners but failed to get any real efforts on target. The home side continued to look the more dangerous side on the break.

Aston Villa took the points with ten minutes left on the clock. A corner from the left saw Benteke rise above Morrison to head home the winner. Reading pushed forward towards the end but looked unlikely to score the equaliser. When the ball did find Le Fondre he was penalised for offside or a foul as Reading completed another disappointing evening.
